Came into country as an "Instant NCO" 11C40 and was assigned as a replacement to the batallion ammunition sgt. (S-4) Haven't heard or seen anything/anyone from the area I served. | Comments: | Sometime after WWII the 9th Inf Div was transferred to Fort Dix. I was drafted 8/18/52 and assigned to the 47th Rgt for basic training (16 weeks). Upon completion I was assigned to the 9th MP Co. The 9th Inf Div was moved on paper to Germany sometime near the end of 1953. Our Fort Dix division then became the 69th Inf Div and remained so after I was separated 8/17/54. The MP Co was good duty. Being a recent college graduate I was assigned to the orderly room as mail clerk, since it was assumed that I could read and write. One day, 1st Sgt Robert (Pappy) Burns said that a new CO was coming and he knew him. Therefore, he was getting a transfer out. If the 1st Sgt felt this way about the new Cpt, this Cpl had better look around, too. The Post Safety Director was housed in the PMO and had two NCO's assigned from my company. One was the statistician. He was finishing his two years and was leaving. Since I had one semester of psych statistics in college I became the NEW EXPERT |

Henry Jezek and John Ax have done a marvelous job in locating guys from the 2/47th and providing us with a great Reunion. Some of the guys that were there were Brice Barnes (Romeo 6), Billy Mc Caskill (Scouts), Rich Uhlich (S-3), Joe Clarino (HHC), Henry Jezek (Panther Alpha 6), Leroy Brown (HHC Co Commander), Danny Lawless (Scouts) and Tim Burke (4.2 FO) among many others from the 67/68 Bearcat group. | Comments: | U.S. Senator Max Cleland led the dedication of a new Vietnam Memorial in Lithonia, GA, on 7-4-99. Lithonia is a small town of 2,700 people and is about 30 miles east of Atlanta. This little town lost 3 sons in Vietnam, and Max Cleland lost both legs and one arm. Max is a super guy, and he never forgot his friends and neighbors who did not come home. One of the 3 men lost was with the 9th Infantry Division, but I could not learn what unit he served with. His name was SP5 Floyd Eugene Collins, Jr. He was a medic, arrived in Vietnam 12-1-66, and was KIA in an ambush on 10-9-67 while trying to aid other wounded soldiers near Bien Hoa. He was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart. He is survived by his father Floyd Sr., mother Sara, sister Susie, and brothers Bobby and David. Thought folks should know that one of our brothers finally got the recognition he deserved at home. Thank you, Floyd Collins, Jr., for your service to our country. God bless you |

I can picture the camp at Binh Phouc like it was yesterday & all the tracks lined up in the motor pool. Also I remember the cross country trip to Cambodia. I was wounded in Cambodia on May 29, 1970. Maybe someone out there will remember me. Welcome home brothers!!!! |

| Comments: | My Vulcan gun Platoon and Stinger section were attached to 2-60 IN during the Motorized days. Managed to get sent on both MTZ'd NTC rotations. Best time I've had in the army! Go Devils! There are lots of us guys still floating around the army who fondly remember our time in the 'Old Reliables'. I was one of dozens of newly minted 2LT's that got shipped to Ft. Lewis in early 1987 to be a part of the 'Motorized' experience. It was great, in that we were literally tasked with validating (and in some instances making up) doctrine for what has evolved in to the Light Cavalry mission of the 2nd ACT (L) a descendant of the old 3rd BDE, 9ID. MG (then) Shalikashvilli was the Division CDR, and we spent 5 1/2 to six months a year in the field at Fort Lewis, Yakima Firing Center, 29 Palms CA, and the NTC. Many of us were devastated when the decision was made to deactivate 9ID, and were further hurt when we weren't sent to the Persian Gulf in the Fall of 1990. Great site, and thanks for the chance to see more of the history of our old division. |

U.S. Senator Max Cleland helped to dedicate a Vietnam memorial in his hometown of Lithonia, GA, on July 4, 1999. Lithonia is a small town east of Atlanta about 30 miles or so. The town had 3 boys lost in Vietnam, one of whom was a medic with the 9th ID. I will try to send you more details on this. Thanks for keeping this site going. |
