| Comments: | My father was a first Sergeant in the 1st battalion, 39th Infantry, 9th division in World War II. He received various decorations including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star and two Presidental Unit citations. He had 8 major battle stars on his ribbons. He went from Fort Bragg as a drill Sergeant to Africa, Sicily, Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge and into Berlin. While preparing for the Normandy Invasion he was stationed in England at a base called Barton Stacey, just a few miles from a town called Overton. There he met my mother and after the war he came back and married her. She was the first President of the War Brides Assoc. in Dayton, Ohio. My father died of cancer in 1970. On top of the cancer he had bouts of malaria that he had gotten in Algeria. All I have of his days in the 9th Div. are his medals and a few photos. If anyone knew him, or served in the same battle group, I would love to hear from you. Thank you and God Bless you all for your sacrifice. |

| Comments: | This unit had 155mm self-propelled howtizers and was in general support. As a result, it deployed as 2, 3, and 6 gun-units as needed. I served as FO, Fire Direction Officer, and XO. We often deployed in "direct fire mode - like tanks" within a few hundred meters of the target, rather than as indirect fire weapons. Anyone involved or remember these missions? |

| Name: | Sgt. Lawrence Wallace Chute |
| Unit(s) | 60th Infantry |
| Year | WWII |
| Comments: | My name is Adam, I live in Alberta, Canada and I have recently discovered
a picture of my great uncle whom I believe served with the 9th during the Second World War. His name was Lawrence Wallace Chute and he was originally from Berwick, Nova Scotia, Canada but resided in New York upon America's entrance in the war. He died in 1970 when I was only one year old and my family remembers him as Uncle Laurie. The photo I have was originally b/w with colour touch-ups. It shows the red over blue octofoil on his left shoulder above sargeants stripes with a T. On his left breast is the Combat Infantryman's badge over his campaign bars (North Africa, Sicily, Tunisia, Normandy, Ardennes, Germany and maybe more if the colours are correct). There is something on his right breast as well but is too blurry to make out. On his cap is what looks like the crest of the 60th infantry regiment, It has a red artillery piece in the top left hand corner and red diamond in the center. It shows the banner underneath like the graphic on the 9th homepage but it is unreadable. He also has five gold bars on his forearm. All I know about him is that he was wounded and required some sort of recontructive surgery to his face, to what extent I don't know. My mother remembers when he returned from the war and he refused to talk about his experiences and was very removed from being part of it all and carried any memories he had to his grave never telling his story. I am putting out a plea to anyone who may have known him or served with him or may know of a resource that may help me to learn anything about his time with the 9th that is unknown to what remains of his family, he had no children of his own and my grandfather (one of 2 brothers) died last year. My sincere thanks. "Some Gave All. All Gave Some." |
