I am a member of a WWII Living History group who goes out and puts on displays for the public, dressed in the uniform and equipment of the time. I have been doing this since 1986. We represent riflemen from the 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. I have a few questions I would like to send to all the veterans who reply. All the replies will be used to help make our displays for the public that much more accurate. I can also send a photo or two, just so you can see what we look like. I would also be interested in hearing from anyone who might have information on friends and relatives who served in the 9th Infantry Division. | Comments: | I was the SDI in Aco 2bn 1st Tng BDE at Fort Riley with 180 trainees-60 pr Platoon-Was Drafted by MG Eckhart for DI school at Ft Leonard Wood when the Div was activated.After Basic and AIT for the Davy Crocket unit,Maj Sellars ask me to be DIVARTY S1 Sgt untill the Div Was ready to Depart for NAM,Then I was offered any one of several 1sg jobs in DIVARTY. I chose A Btry 4th Arty Commanded By Cpt Tait.We traveled by ship to Vung Tau and by truck convoy to Bearcat.Each truck was loaded in two rows back to back facing out with a machine gun pointed ftont right and rear left.Every man was locked and loaded and there was only a handfull of us who were combat veterans. The Ausies had the job of clearing the road to Bearcat. I was thinking I would hate to be in their shoes if even one sniper takes a shot at us because I felt sure the entire damned convoy would have opened up and no way to stop them. I confess I breathed a sigh of relief when we pulled into Bearcat. We moved out to the (Rongsat Special Zone )?? for TET of 67 and I think our first casulty was a platoon Sgt of the Inf Unit we were supporting when he went to chech a LP he had put out...after it was dark....That was a terrable error by a non prior combat NCO who lost his life when he aproached a very scared young soldier. A costly lesson but as Gen McCarthur once said "War is Hell". We soon moved to Rach Kien south of Saigon where I left the Btry in late May to become 1sg Of the 246th PSYOP Co at Train Compound near Bien Hoa Airbase, where I returned to CONUS in Jan 68. I did one more tour in 1970-71 with the 210th Avn Bn at Long Than North next to Bearcat as Bn s-2 Sgt.I retired in Mar 1973 at Ft riley Ks. Retired from Civil Service in 1995 and still work part time for a contractor at the bulk fuel Tank Farm. experience was in the direct support unit (DSU) for the 3rd Bde "Go Devils"
which, if memory serves, was commanded by COL Anton Jacques Bergeron, AKA
"The Ragin' Cajun," and included 2/1 Inf, 2/60 Inf, and 3/47 Inf. I ended up at Ft. Lewis, WA by way of Ft. Devens, MA on a PCS from HQ&A Co, 26th SB, 3rd ID (Mechanized), Aschaffenburg-am-Main, FRG where I had been unit armorer for 21 months of my 2-year tour. I still have most pleasant memories of the Puget Sound and western Washington. The highlights of my time wearing the Octofoil: 1) graduating from the I Corps NCO Academy's Primary Leadership Development Course (PLDC) as an Honor Graduate (95% avg.); 2) being promoted to Sergeant (E-5) (one of the proudest days of my life); and 3) marching for GEN Colin Powell (then Commander, Forces Command and later Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff) when MG John M. Shalikashvili (then Commander, 9th ID and later, as GEN, successor to GEN Powell as Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff) gave up command of the division. I'm glad sites such as this exist; regardless of when, where, or how we served, we veterans must tell our stories because no damn body else can or will! I'm trying to do my part on Matt Wallace's The Compleat Heretic which I describe as "the personal web site of an economic and social conservative, Republican, moral traditionalist, pro-life, Army veteran, NRA Patron Life Member, Secular Humanist atheist." After Airboat training, we went down to 2nd of the 60th Riverine Force, then I left the airboat company and went back to my orginal orders, which was Headquaters Company, 5th of the 60th Mechanized Infantry. Would like to re-establish contact with men I attended airboat training with. Would also like to get in contact with Hector Villarreal,Company Commander of the 5th of the 60th in late 67 to early 68. If anyone knows where to find Hector, please pass his location on to me. Also, I am looking for the following men: Paul B.MountII, George J. Gonzales, Henry H Vaughn Jr.,Tommy J Williams, Kenneth J. Oliver, James Evans, Ronald Petrucci. These men were wounded at Tan An South just as I was, and I need their help to verify what happened. From entrance into country, I went to Airboat training with the 5th Special Forces, then to 2nd of the 60th in Tan Tru, 5th of the 60th in Binh Phuoc, then 9th S&T in Bearcat, then to in-country NCO School, then back to airboats Echo Company 15th Engineer Battlion 2nd airboat platoon, then I went home on emergency leave.
