I have contact with BG Roseborough and MG (then COL) Maury Kendall, 1st Bde Cdr and Chief of Staff.. Jim Haines (lzblackhawk@pocketmail.com) forwarded your site address. He has done yoeman's (a navy term???) work getting together members of the 4/39 Inf for reunion last July. Finding names has been the most difficult part of our search. St Louis has been helpful with unit rosters etc (members of the 4/39, contact Jim Hains to be added to their roster). Your page is excellent. I was impressed with the amount of information you have gathered. Due to the lack of a formal museum and association for the 9th, this is the only way we can develop and preserve the memories and accomplishments of the "Old Reliables", one of the Armies most combat experienced Divisions. You can learn more about us by doing a net search for ASA or Army Security Agency and going to Maddog's home page. We could never discuss what we did and even today are reluctant to go into details with someone who wasn't ASA. I stayed with the 335th until January of 1970, ending up in Can Tho. I tried to join the 9th Infantry Division Association and was told that their membership did not yet include Vietnam veterans. |

E, 3/39th and shipped to Schofield Barracks in August 1969. Also interested in finding David Newkirk (Warrent Officer) that was a chopper pilot and flew support for my platoon. Don't know unit, but spent time with him at Zama in Japan (hospital) and then from March till Aug 1969. My full name is Theo David Rasco, however I always went by David. I arrived in Nam in December of 68 and was assigned to the 3rd of the 39th, Echo Company. Was wounded in Tet of 69 and spent several weeks in hospital (both in Nam and at Zama). Returned to Nam in April of 69 and took command of the newly formed Recon/Sniper Plt. where I served till Aug 69 when Nixon pulled the first units out. Did tons of Air Mobile ("stay behinds" and "sniffer" ops) plus working with local Mac V and VN units. You have a really good website. Enjoyed visiting. |
| Name: Joe Tarnovsky Website: 240th Assault Helicopter Co. Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Parma, Ohio Time: 1997-12-21 05:36:32 Comments: I really enjoyed the 9th Inf. Division's web site. I served with the 240th Assault Helicopter Company as a doorgunner/crewchief, UH-1C helicopter gunships, gun platoon; we were called the "Mad Dogs." Our slicks were called the "Greyhounds." We worked with the 9th Infantry on many, many occasions and we were always proud to have provided lift helicopters, and in my case, gun cover to these brave troops. We always felt safe working with the 9th because if we went down, we knew those 11 Bravos would bust their butts and put their lives on the line to get us out of those choppers. Welcome Home to the men of the 9th Infantry, a proud and brave unit who were second to none!! I can still vividly see the trooper on the ground with the headband around his head; I had popped smoked on a VC/NVA bunker and he was leading his men to the location. My gunner and I had both guns out the right door of the gunship ready to provide covering fire if the troopers needed it. The AC (Aircraft Commander) had 38 10lb warhead rockets at the grunts disposal. The 9th Infantry and the 240th Assault Helicopter Company made a great team. | Name: Bobby D. Jefcoat Website: Referred by: NewsGroups From: Batesville, Ms. Time: 1997-12-20 15:17:48 Comments: I served with 3rd Plt. Co. B 4th 47th 9th Infantry from July 1968 thru July 1969. I was transferred to the 3rd 60th about 10 days before deros, but myself and David Mauch never reported to this Unit. We went to Dong Tam and got duplicate tickets to Long Binh for processing to come back to "the world." If you remember, the 3rd and 6oth was the first unit of the 9th or for that matter the first unit that made the "appearance of" bringing the troops home. They were brought through a Big Coming Home Parade in New Jersey. All the guys on my orders were short-timers transferred to the 3rd 60th from other units. I still have copies of those orders! David Mauch wherever you are, thanks for getting us those duplicate plane tickets!! I never saw you again after the old first Sgt. told you your hair was too long to come home, and you told him to -- himself and then you left. I know the Benewah was sunk for a reef barrier, but does anyone know what happened to the USS Nueces? I'd like to hear from any of the guys, I've been in touch with several since Viet Nam, some may remember Platoon Sgt. Joseph Salazar, he passed away last year. We had exchanged Christmas cards every year. I was with him when he got shot in the leg and was dusted off, I later saw him in Long Binh as I was leaving for R&R and he was returning from Hawaii on R&R where he had met with his wife. Too much rambling....getting old. |

| Name: Brian Tate Website: More Information on this entry Referred by: Net Search From: Australia Time: 1997-12-06 00:01:00 Comments: What a find! I represent a group of Aussies involved at present in seeking recognition for Flight Lieutenant Garry Cooper who served on attachment to the 9th Division in Vietnam in 1968. Garry was a passenger in a small `bubble' type chopper where he was coordinating air strikes for a ground action at Cai Be. It is believed the ground unit/s involved where from the 1st Brigade, 9th Infantry. The chopper was shot down at a very low altitude between the opposing forces, the pilot KIA and Garry and a US infantry colonel wounded. Garry carried the semi-conscious colonel to a rice paddy embankment under heavy fire. Both men evacuated by rescue chopper the following morning. General Julian Ewell, CO 9th Infantry recommended Cooper for Congressional Medal of Honor but his Australian nationality precluded him. General Ewell then pushed Australian authorities for highest award this country. No 30 years later government has decided to establish a military Board of Inquiry into the 1968 recommendation. This is unprecedented in Australian military history. We are urgently seeking anyone who witnessed or has knowledge of witnesses at Cai be 18 August 1968. Help would be much appreciated from `down under'. Regards Brian Tate. Great site. Anyone can send information to:

I served with B Btry, 2/4th Artillery at Camp Robert Bethune, Binh Phuoc, Tan An Provence, from November 1967 until Oct 1968. Last two months of tour was XO HHB 2/4 Artillery fixing unit fund and opening/closing O Club. I was FO for A/5/60th Inf Dec67-Jan68, FDO(4th FO) from Jan68 until Bob Gibson DEROSED (April 68?), then I got the job of Firing Battery XO (best job in the Army for an LT), then elevated to Btry Cdr for a month. My 1SG was Mancel Prince, hellofa guy who came from retirement so his sole son wouldn't have to serve there. He retired (again) as SGM. He did more for the safety of the soldier of that battery than anyone. I did a major screw up in 1968...I failed to standup to the battalion cdr regarding a new chief of smoke replacing SSG John O. Nichols who was on 30-day leave after extending for another 6 months in Vietnam. John, if you are still out there, I am sorry for being weak. Ron Van Dyck |

From: Bridgton, Maine Time: 1997-11-16 16:42:00 Comments: Although I was not in Vietnam as a combat soldier I was in the Army from 1967 to 1969. In 1995 I went to Vietnam with Courtney Frobenius and Ed Eaton . Two vets from the 60th. We were met by members of the 516 the 516 Main force Viet Cong. It was quite an experience for me. You guys of the 9th have my greatest respect. |

I myself served with 6/31st Inf. from May '68- May '69. Came in country to a hot, humid, rotting, stinking, noisy & garbage covered place and had to stay in some place called Camp Alpha until moved to Cam Ranh Bay. From there to Bear Cat to pack up the company's gear & move it to Nha Be & later followed by Dong Tam in IV Corps. You name it, we were in it, from Slicks, Tango boats, Duece & halfs to sampans and walking point. We all have different experiences to share, but all of us are united as being Vietnam Vet's. It's Good to see there are still a few of us still looking for 'ol memories. Take care Relable's. |
