| Comments: | Hello, I was a medic assigned to Co C, 2nd Bn, 60th Inf, 3rd Brigade of the 9th Infantry Div and based out of Tan Tru. My best friend was Allen Schaefer, Radio Man, out of Dayton, Ohio. When I was wounded I spent the next 3 1/2 months in hospitals, First Saigon, then Can Rhan Bay then Yokoham, Japan (kept getting gangrine and they had to do subsequent operations, finally shipped me off to Japan for treatment, then back to the states. If any of you remember me, I would like to say hello and especially if anyone knows the whereabouts of Allen Schafer. I am looking to obtain any photographs of the base camp or operations we or you were on. Thank you very much, God Bless and after all this time,a big Welcome Home, I Salute you All Who Served in the 9th in the Mekong Delta!!! |

To the best of my knowledge, my father served in this unit and I'd like to hear from anyone who knew him. He name was Charles Feldman, from Brooklyn, NY. He was a Technical Sgt. He served in the Army for about 3 years between 1939 and 1942. I know where he served due to the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal he had. He may have served with a Sgt. James Wood. Also, he may have been under the command of a Frank B. Berry, who later became the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health and Medical. I appreciate anyone's help with info or leads to where I can learn more. |

He served with the 47th Regiment during the latter days of December 1944 through May 1945. He was wounded at Remagen on March 11, 1945, and received the Purple Heart. He was s T-5 at that time. | Comments: | Just thought I would put some of the case file on the website of my uncle S/Sgt. Paul E. Alexander'S Distinguished Service Cross recommendation. There is a lot more in the case file than what is in the citation. Effect of or result of deed in question: As a direct result of S/Sgt. Alexander's action in individually wiping out the enemy strong point of concentrated cross-fire of four machine gun positions the Company and Battalion which had been held up for over an hour was able to advance to take the high ground which was of such tactical advantage that it influenced the success of the entire campaign. Furthermore S/Sgt. Alexander"s act was a great inspiration to the entire company. Detailed resume of action: On or about the evening of 14 June 1944 in the vicinity of Picqueville, Normandy, France, S/Sgt. Alexander"s squad was given the mission of taking an enemy position consisting of four machine guns and 10 men supporting it with fire from automatic weapons and rifles which had laid down a concentrated cross-fire. With superior efficiency, S/Sgt. Alexander organized his squad, moved forward under heavy automatic small arms and intermittent mortar and artillery fire to the enemy position. S/Sgt Alexander was at the front of his squad and was at all times exposed to enemy fire because of the terrain in the immediate area before the company being bare of cover. While crossing this terrain in advancing to the enemy positions, S/Sgt. Alexander although mortally wounded, continued to lead his squad and direct their attack personally. He personally threw grenades into the four enemy machine gun positions, completely silencing them and inflicting numerous casualties on the enemy. S/Sgt. Alexander's actions were an inspiration to his men who succeeded in completing their mission thereby aiding the Company as well as the Battalion to continue on the their final objective. S/Sgt Alexander died of wounds received during this action. |

He was in Vietnam like from August 68 until 2-5-69. He was killed near hill 1176, if that is familar to anyone. I would just like to get some more information on who knew him, what it was like, and who all was with him the day he died. I was only 9 when Gary died, but just recieved many scrapbooks from Gary's mom of his time in Vietnam, including old letters, some that were mailed just before he died. I do not have any paper work on the purple heart or the purple heart, when they come maybe there willbe some reading or dates, but, I would greatly appreciate anything anyone knows of this day, there were alot dead and wounded, I understand over half were shot in the head, please reply' thans, Autry Cumbie.
