The web has given me more information on the 9th Inf.in the last few days, than I learned in the last 30 years. I first saw your notice for the reunion in the back of the DAV Magazine. Although you may placed previous ads, this is the first one I noticed. My time with the 9th Infantry was from October '68 to June "69. I served with HHC, 2nd Bn. 39th Inf. Some of my time was as HHC XO and running convoys out to the Firebases. I cannot give enough praise to the great people I was fortunate to serve with. I may have forgotten some of your names, but I will never forget your hard work, sacrifices and dedication. All the best to you and your families, wherever you are today. |

| Name: Fred Dorfman Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Sedona, AZ Time: 1998-06-06 10:16:24 Comments: I served in Viet Nam from 9/67 to 9/98 and was assigned to C company of the 4th/39th Infantry. Some of the locations my unit was assigned to included: Bear Cat,the Ben Son Rubber Treee Plantation, the French Fort, Nah Bay Harbor, Tan Tru, My Tho, Dong Tam,the pink palace, the central highlands near Plakeiu among other garden spots. For those of you who might not remember me, I was the infantry man who left the line to become a cook. With all the cooks going home at one time, Sgt. Farmer's discovery of my cooking skills was more then timely. I considered myself a genius in the mess hall and made sure the guys on the line were well taken care of, 24 hours a day. Where ever you are Sgt. Farmer, THANK YOU! To the clerk who got me the MOS change...Thank you....to Tubby, you forgot how much you can get done with a case of steaks, to Joseph Heller....thank you for helping me keep my sanity. To all the old friends and compatriots, I hope time and your memories have treated you well....to the guys who left in '68.... "Welcome Home" on your 30th anniverary. |

| Name: Harv Dahl Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In! From: Opelika, Alabama Time: 1998-05-28 19:35:23 Comments: I signed on in mid-April and came back tonight for a second visit. I did my time in fire direction control with Headquarters Battery, 1st/11th Artillery at Ft. Riley in '66, then on to Nam on the USS Rose. In July '67 I was transferred to 9th Division Artillery as a recon sergeant and did the rest of my tour there. For all those who haven't been back to Ft. Riley since we trained there and wonder what it looks like-- I lived in Manhattan, KS from 1987-96 when I worked for Kansas State University. I drove across the fort regularly to get to a good golf course just north of Junction City. Some parts of Riley seem to have changed very little. Remember the yellow barracks buildings in Camp Forsyth? Well, they're still there and many of them look exactly like they did in '66. I even found my old training area and building. Amazingly, the telephone booths where we lined up to call home are still standing--probably still work. The chapel looks the same. The area where the px was has been changed--now it's a regular gas station. The area where we had bayonet training is now a park--picnic tables and all. Main post looks much the same, with little rebuilding. Of course, the roads through the fort have been renamed--mostly for the 1st Infantry Division, since that's their permanent home. The post's headquarters building looks the same--except now there's a Big Red One insignia out front where the Octafoil used to welcome everyone. Custer Hill is the major growth area. The old green concrete block buildings have been replaced with red brick. The Hill is covered with new housing, new schools, a pretty good golf course (the old 9-hole course at Main Post is closed). Several roads have been added for access from all directions. Most the troops stationed at Riley are on Custer Hill. Camp Funston has been pretty much dismantled. In the early 90s it was used as a prisoner compound, but I understand they now get sent to Leavenworth. Funston is now a big parking pad for the tanks. Remember the train loading area where we took all our gear for shipping to the West Coast? It doesn't look any different. I went through there several times when the Big Red One was getting ready to head over to the Gulf War. Some things never change. There was occasional talk about closing Ft. Riley but when we left the area nearly two years ago it was still going strong. For those who are more interested in what's happened to Junction City--they've cleaned up 9th Street! I don't know what the boys do for entertainment now, but JC is a pretty quiet little town. If you ever get through that area--stop and look. |
