Gaertner Website: Referred by: Link from other Website From: Wauwatosa, WI Time: 1999-01-23 11:27:39 Comments: My name is Tom Gaertner and I'm signing this guestbook on behalf of my dad, Howard Gaertner. Howard joined the Ninth in the last week of June, 1944. He had trained with the 78th Division for a year as a 60mm mortar gunner and was assigned to M Co, 3rd Battalion, 47th Infantry Regiment in a heavy machine gun squad. (As an infantry replacement his MOS No. didn't carry much weight). Dad has confirmed that whatever you've heard about Normandy hedgerow country is true...it was hell on earth. On July 25th over 3000 U.S. aircraft carpet bombed a designated sector near St. Lo. The 3rd battalion's position was battered by errant bombs resulting in significant casualties. Their next major engagement was the Falaise Gap region and first contact with British troops. On or about August 18-19 the Ninth reassembled outside Chartes, France. The battalion was attached to the Third Armored Division Combat Command B for support. Howard's unit crossed into Belgium on or about September 1. On September 3rd the Ninth regrouped at Phillipeville, Belgium and crossed the Meuse River on September 5th. Dad was wounded upon reaching the east bank of the river; the advance being stymied by the terrain and strong resistance from seasoned German troops. After being evacuated to the 114th US Army hospital in Kidderminster, England Howard was subsequently released and reclassified; not to return to the Ninth. He was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star and has been active in the Ninth Association for the past decade. There aren't many WWII vets from the Ninth left and he'd appreciate hearing from any. He can be reached at 2452 N. 93rd Street Wauwatosa, WI 53226-1702 (414) 778-2333. I'll pass along any email sent to me. You have an outstanding website. |

Ken would like info on an ambush he was wounded in. This took place on March 13th, 1969. His company CO, a captain was killed, and 22 members of his company were killed or wounded. It was possible his unit was Co. D, 4/39. Ken was a machine gunner in the unit. He was told later while in the hospital that a Lt. took command of the company, and called in artilley, on top of them to break up the attack. The Lt. was latter awarded a silver star. |

Our purpose is to educate and persuade our national leaders to honor the confirmed and unequivocal commitments made to military personnel who answered the call to serve our nation in time of all-out war and who assumed often unpopular responsibilities so that the cold war could be won. Tarnovsky Website: LZ of the 240th AHC Referred by: Word of Mouth From: Parma, Ohio Time: 1998-10-07 20:56:58 Comments: A great tribute to a bunch of great men. Whenever we learned in the morning before taking off from Bearcat that we would be working with the "OLD RELIABLES," the crews of the MAD DOG Gunships and the GREYHOUND Slicks knew it was going to be a real good day. I flew as a doorgunner/crew chief with the Mad Dogs of the 240th Assault Helicopter Company from July 69 to October of 70. We worked with the 9th many times out of Tan An heading for the Rung Sat. The Mad Dog Gunships would provide aerial rocket artillery and M60 doorgun for the Troopers of the 9th Infantry and we knew if we, the Mad Dogs went down in a HOT LZ, the brave and courageous GRUNTS of the 9th would risk everything to get us out ALIVE. To the men of the 9th Infantry Division, the crews of the Mad Dogs and Greyhounds render a Salute of RESPECT with REVERENCE to all of you, we were proud to provide the Huey Slicks and Huey Guns! We were a great team. We hope you'll visit our website! By the way, looking for a 9th Infantry Trooper that received a head wound from shrapnel sometime in 1970. He and his buddy were Medevaced out by a Mad Dog Gunship in the AO known as the Rung Sat. The Mad Dog Gunner and Armorer of the 240th, Mark Dowdy, provided first aid until the wounded men were taken to an Evac Hospital. The 9th Trooper with the head wound had a bush hat with the word "Jane" embroidered on the brim. Mark Dowdy would like to know if this trooper and his buddy survived. God Bless the men of the 9th Infantry and WELCOME HOME! |

I was assigned to this unit March 1966, to reactivate the 9th Infantry Division. We shipped on the USNS General Rose to Vung Tau, Vietnam, arrived December 31,1966. The Battalion initially staged in Bearcat and became part of the 3rd Brigade. We relieved a Battalion of the 25th Infantry Division at Rach Kien, the seat of Long An Province, in the Mekong Delta. It was a hard road for the Battalion as this area the VC was uncontested until we began our Search and Destroy and forced them to fight us. We suffered tremendous casualties. I left Vietnam December 1967. Anyone from the Battalion reading this article, contact me at e-mail: pvna71c@prodigy.com or drop me a note to this address: 1694 Hooheno St., Pearl City, HI 96782-1610. From: LAKELAND, FLA Time: 1998-09-29 20:15:44 Comments: I served with the 86th Combat Engineers and was TDY with the 9th Div just before I ETS-ed 07--67 I was there. Operation Akron between Vung Tau, the Black Virgin Mts, and the Michelin rubber plantation at the end of May 67-- beginning of Jul 67 As I remember it, the rear artillery sprayed us as we got surrounded by NVA. We were way out numbered until the hueys arrived. "Thank god; then the artillery had to stop." We were @ Bear Cat and before that we were @ Phu Loi and helped the 1/st Div. I also remember that I got tangled up w/ a string of ears hanging off a track when the fire fight started. I may have some photos during a day out there. |
