Eight Stars to Victory:
A History of the Veteran U.S. Ninth Infantry Division

By Joseph B. Mittelman   Columbus, Ohio: Herr, 1948

Eight Stars to Victory

"If you are not interested in action, drama, humor, travel and pathos all rolled-up into one vivid tale, don't read another word! For this is to tell you about a new kind of book -- EIGHT STARS TO VICTORY. It is a story which relates the blazing career of a group of fighting Americans known as the Ninth Infantry Division. These are the soldiers whom correspondents labeled magnificent and Hitler's Nemesis; whose corps commander termed The Old Reliables.     EIGHT STARS TO VICTORY is the living saga of how eight battle stars were won -- from the shores of North Africa, in 1942, to the banks of the Elbe, in 1945. Its cast of characters is over 50,000 strong. Nearly 25,000 casualties were sustained to bring you this story -- 4,747 of these died. "
-- Dust jacket comments

This 408 page book was compiled for the 9th Infantry Division Association. It contains a wealth of historical information begining with the 9th Division formation in World War I. The 9th Division was reactivated for World War II at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. You go to battle with elements of the 9th in North Africa against the famed Africa Corps and liberate Tunisia. After this baptism of fire, the division is instrumental in the capture of Sicily. Then it is on to England to equip and train for the invasion of France. On D-Day +4 the Old Reliables begin the drive from Normandy to the Elbe River to meet up with the Soviet Army.

The book has numerous maps, photos, and coverage of each campaign that earned the division its eight battle stars.

The best bet for finding a copy of Eight Stars To Victory is through an Internet search of rare and used book dealers. Expect to pay from $80 to $300. I got my copy through Advanced Book Exchange.  The last time I used their search engine I found 8 copies of the book available.

I also found a copy at the Los Angeles Public Library. Check your public library too.

I see this book often on the www.ebay.com auction website. Search under Collectibles: Militaria and under Books: Nonfiction: Military. Past auctions have sold this book for $50 to $150.

Doc: Medic Book Cover

ISBN: 0671560581

Evans was a young man who envied his father's WWII rite of passage and sought his own. He joined the Army as a medic and volunteered for Vietnam to seek his destiny. His 9th Infantry Division duty assignment was the 9th Medical Battalion but he had come to Vietnam to see combat. With persistence, Evans got himself attached to the 4th of the 39th Infantry as a platoon medic for most of his tour. Now it was time to learn how the reality of combat measured up to his boyhood imagination. Evans tells a vivid tale of his first hand experience with the aftermath of life and death conflict in a far off land.

By Lt. Cdr. Thomas J. Cutler, USN

This is a very readable concise history of the US Navy involvement in Vietnam. The author weaves facts and figures with the human stories of the men and women who were fighting a different kind of war. You will see the beginnings of the Vietnam navy, the US advisor role, and active involvement with coastal and inland waterway operations. The stories of  naval personnel performing routine surveillance of coastal waters or engaged in the terror of close quarter combat on the muddy waters of the Mekong Delta paint a picture of the war in Vietnam that is often overlooked. A partnership of Navy and 9th Infantry Divisions units loosened the tight grip that the Viet Cong had on the strategically important Delta.

By Shelby L. Stanton.

The 9th Infantry Division LRRP Platoon became the LRP Detachment which became E Company, 50th Infantry which became E Company, 75 Infantry (Rangers) which... Got all that?  Don't worry, Shelby Stanton sorts it all out for you. He not only presents the history of Rangers and LRRPs unit by unit, but also paints a vivid picture of the toughest of all jobs in Vietnam.

By Colonel David H. Hackworth,  Julie Sherman

This 875 page book chronocles the 25 year career of  David Hackworth. The writing is excellent and interesting.

In one section of the book, Colonel Hackworth proceeds to describe his effort to turn the 4/39th into an effective fighting force. Casualties went down and morale went up. The 60 pages he devotes to the 4/39 and 9th Infantry Division provide valuable insight on how political influences and personal ambitions affected the lives of soldiers who served their country.

Uncertain Seasons

Uncertain Seasons
By Elizabeth Shelfer Morgan

My sister, Elizabeth Shelfer Morgan, wrote Uncertain Seasons in 1994 (published by University of Alabama Press). It contains the unedited letters from our uncle, 1st Lt. William Howard Shelfer, who was with the 9th Div., 60th Infantry, B Company in North Africa, Sicily, England (as S4 ) and France. He was killed on Aug. 11, 1944 during the counterattack near Mortain. I was born in '43 and although a girl, was named for him.

I have helped develop a website with her ---  Uncertain Seasons that may be of interest to you and other 9th Division veterans. This book has been awarded the Best Book for Young Readers by the Florida Historical Society (1995). It has been used to teach WWII to High School and College students and Study Guides are included in the website. I located several of his 9th Division army buddies through the newsletter, Octofoil in 1995. Some of their letters about him are on the website.

Mary Howard Morgan

Webmaster's note:  The Uncertain Seasons website has several interesting historical documents, photographs and has an excellent bibliography.

Jungle in Black
By Steve Macguire

Jungle in Black is the memoir of Steve Macguire, a young Airborne Ranger who commanded a 9th Infantry Division battalion Recon Platoon (6th Battalion, 31st Infantry) in the Mekong Delta. It was there that an exploding Vietcong mine blinded him  for life. He lost sight-but not his courage. This is an honest first-person account that never wallows in self-pity as the author reasssembles his life in a country that has turned it's back on the war, and the Vietnam veteran. Victory Road
By Robert C. Baldridge

Victory Road is a great World War II memoir: The gripping story of a determined young soldier in an artillery battalion of the famous 9th Infantry Division of the U.S. First Army, which invaded Normandy in June 1944 and fought on through five battle campaigns to victory over Germany in May 1945 at the Elbe River.

The author accurately and compellingly describes a soldier's experiences in Army basic training; being shipped overseas to England in December 1943 on the ocean liner Queen Mary; further training in England; crossing the English Channel to Utah Beach in Normandy on D-Day + 4; and then fighting the German forces for almost a year while living in the field during all four seasons.

Nudge Blue
By Donald E. Lavender

Lavender was a member of Company I, 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, originally arriving as a replacement in early October 1944 in the Hürtgen Forest.

There are a lot of stories about the war. Some have been made into movies. If you are looking for sensationalism, you won't find it here. If you have an interest in what war was like to a 20-year-old in the Infantry, Nudge Blue comes close to describing that experience.

The combat portion of this story was written directly from notes accumulated during the actual fighting. In the over 50 years since, facts about places and unit action have been verified to assure accuracy. It includes action in several places that are famous—the Hürtgen Forest, the Bulge, the Rhine River crossing at Remagen and contact with the Russians on the Elbe River.

Lavender's experiences in combat make for fascinating, insightful reading, and an excellent companion to Bob Baldridge's Victory Road, showing what it was like to be an infantryman in the 9th Division.
