9th Infantry Division Banner

The Memorial History

Plaque.jpg In the time since the 9th Infantry Division ended its distinguished service in the Republic of Vietnam, there has been no tribute to the service and sacrifice of its men and women. Mike Clark and Doug Johnson took it on themselves to create a memorial to honor their fellow soldiers who served in Vietnam and World War II. When the 9th Infantry Division Association chose to not participate, the memorial was focused on the Vietnam era.

In July 1997, Doug and Mike decided to proceed with plans to create a memorial for the 9th Infantry Division to be placed at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. They thought it might take a few years to raise the $3,000 needed. However, good fortune favored the project and it took only 8 months.

Donations came from many sources. The Golden Valley VFW Post donated enough to Photo thumbnailpurchase the plaque. Individuals of the VFW post also contributed. The Mobile Riverine Force Association contributed and also placed an ad for the memorial project in their publication, 'River Currents'. Ads in Vietnam Magazine and Military Magazine brought donations from many individuals; enlisted men to a Lt. General. They gave from 5 dollars up to 200 dollars; each dollar helped. Mike and Doug extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone that made this project successful.

OctofoilThe result is a memorial of which all Americans and we can be proud. I am sure that I speak for all 'Old Reliables' in thanking Mike and Doug for their inspiration, dedication, and hard work that made this memorial possible. Our thanks also go to all those who supported this project.
