Don Anderson Driving Boston Whaler The boat was a Boston Whaler aka "Romeo Bravo" or "MBP" motor boat plasic. We used them to patrol the river outside of Dong Tam to drop charges around the dredges to keep the VC sappers from mining them. One had been lost to a mine two months before I arrived. We carried two PRC25 radios, one tuned to our Bn.(15th Engrs) and the other tune to Navy APB's with real firepower, we also carried 1/4 pound tnt and later C4 and also grenades and our m16 and occasionally a M60. We patolled day and night and it was one of the best jobs around. My regular job was a demolition specialist on Search & Destroy missions with MRF. - Don Anderson |
On Search and Destroy Mission Infantry guys on my first S&D Mission as a Combat Engineer (Demolition Specialist). I do not remember the unit I was supporting although it was probably the 3rd of the 60th. The mission was in August, 1967, the MRF had been at Vung Tau for resupply and refitting. We had been to the Beach and then moved out for this mission. I remember the landing site had high grass and no mud. In the photos there is one guy on the right who was a Sgt. He is carrying a shotgun. On Sept 15, 1967 he was killed in an ambush while we were still on the landing craft. He had 3 days to rotation and we had just finish talking when a RPG or B-40 hit our boat. The heavy set guy sitting on the ground was the Captain of the Company I was supporting. One of the RTO's is standing on the left and the on his knees was from California I think and possibly had an Italian surname. Those two guys gave me a lot of flack on that mission because I was the "FNG" plus I carried an air mattress, and everything else the army gave me. I learned more on that mission than all the rest.
